My new timewaster!
Texas Hold'em

Thanks to [info]taynar I have joined the ranks of online poker players.  In my case it's at Full Tilt Poker

I've always sucked at most forms of poker.  Never could keep any of what beat what straight.  This past year or two, however, I've had a bit of a passing interest in Texas Hold'em thanks to Bravo Channel's Celebrity Poker Showdown. Very entertaining to watch these guys. Phil Gordon, the color commentary guy, is someone even [info]coat_of_arms would look up to (Phil is 6'9").  Kinda sad to see how Dave Foley has let himself go, tho.

At any rate, on the 'fake money' side of Full Tilt:  They start you out with $1000 in chips.  You can reload every 5 minutes.   3 hours later, I'd only reloaded once.  Had a blast, met a couple of cool people.   Lots of assholes, but a few cool ones.   This one guy said I wasn't too bad and when he found out it was my first night there he encouraged me to enter in the freeroll tourney that was starting in the next hour.

A 'freeroll' tourney is free to enter.  Real cash prizes for the top 3.  I was in a $20 freeroll for 900 people max: 1st got $10, 2nd got $6, 3rd got $4...or something like that.  You get $1500 in chips.  They started the blind at 15/30 and would raise it every 10 minutes.   By the time I got knocked out it was up to something like 400/800 - with a $125 ante.   Starts to hurt at that point.   I lasted FAR longer than I thought I would.  Was even at several tables with 1 or 2 top ten players at a time.  After the first hour or two I was in the top 100.  I stayed in the top 70 for awhile...and eventually peaked in the top 35.   I finished 34th out of 900.  Not bad for my first time out.  Learned a LOT about the game last night and had a blast to boot.

Now I have a delimma.... World of Warcraft or Texas Hold'Em.  Man... decisions decisions.....

Yes, but you can't win money at WoW. :)

Well..if I wanted to spend 24x7 on WoW farming gold...I could sell it online. But that's kinda against terms of service.

At least if I win at Hold'Em, I won't get banned from WoW. =)

...do NOT play for money with a guy that has Tourett's...

I got bluffed SO badly by said player because he was impossible to read. I had 3 nines, a decent hand to play with, and he went bet enough funds to equal about half of my stack. I called him, and he swore and went the other half. I thought he was deliberately "tell"ing me that he had a bad hand so that he could trap me on a subsequent call, so I folded on the river. He had squat. I'm still not happy about it. :)

So, in other words, you weren't playing your hand. You were playing the player. Bad mistake. What else was on the board? trips is usually a decent hand unless there is a flush or straight draw showing.

I don't remember anything special about the community cards except that I had pocket 9s and picked up a third 9.

Everyone started off with $10. He took me down under $5 with his bluff, but I got back up to $7 before the evening was out. Not bad for quarter ante, and the rest of the hands that night didn't get nearly that big. To be most honest, I was playing the clock the most. We started playing at 6, this happened about 6:30pm, and I was thinking, "if i lose this hand I'll be sitting on my butt for three hours" because I had arrived with a friend who was still playing. So yeah I'm not doing that again. :)
